How to Use Animated GIFs in Your Emails?

You can now upload animated GIFs to the Media Gallery and use them in your member emails and newsletters, with the animation preserved.

Animated GIFs are a great way to liven up your announcements, event promos, and celebration emails. You can now upload GIFs to the Media Gallery and use them in your member emails, and the animation is preserved in the sent email.

Uploading a GIF

Upload your .gif file to the Media Gallery the same way you upload any image. The gallery accepts GIF files alongside the other supported image types.

Adding a GIF to an email

In the email editor, add an image and pick your GIF from the Media Gallery, just like a regular picture. The GIF plays in the editor preview, and it keeps playing in the email your members receive.

Things to Know

  • In the Media Gallery grid, GIFs are shown as a still thumbnail to keep the gallery fast. The animation itself is untouched and plays in your emails.

  • Nearly all major email clients play GIFs. The main exception is the Outlook desktop app on Windows, which shows only the first frame, so pick a GIF whose first frame works as a standalone image.

  • Keep GIFs light, ideally around 1 MB or less. Large GIFs make your email slow to load, especially on mobile.
