What Are Segments?
A segment is a dynamically updated group of contacts based on specific criteria. For example, you can create a segment of members whose subscriptions are active or those who attended an event. Segments update automatically, so you always have the latest data.
How to Create a Segment
Navigate to the Contacts app
Set Your Criteria
Use filters like membership status, custom fields, or tags.
Combine multiple conditions to narrow down your list. For example, you can filter by Membership = Active and City = New York.
Save Your Filtered List as a Segment
Choose a descriptive name, such as “Active Members in New York.”
Your segment is now ready to use. Whenever there's a new subscriber with an address in New York, they'll be included in this list.
Using Segments
Once your segment is created, you can:
Send targeted emails or SMS to segment members.
Export the segment for external reporting.
View dynamic updates in real-time as contacts meet (or no longer meet) the criteria.
Editing and Managing Segments
If you want to see all your segments, you can go to the Segments page in your Settings. Each segment on this page has three actions next to it: See Contacts, Rename and Delete.
Renaming a Segment
Segment names can be changed at any time without affecting the filters or the contacts in the segment. On the Segments page, click Rename next to the segment, enter the new name and save. The updated name will appear everywhere the segment is used, including the Contacts app and the Messages module.
Updating a Segment's Filters
If you want to update the filters for a specific segment, you can go to your contacts and choose the segment first. Then, you can add or remove filters and save. You'll be able to choose to update the existing segment at this point.
Advanced Segmentation with Filters and Filter Groups
With filter groups you can segment contacts with combining "And" with "Or" filters.
This becomes really useful when you're querying entities such as emails, phones, addresses, works and educations.
Engagement Filters
You can use the following attributes to filter your contacts based on their engagement with the platform.
Last Activity Date
Profile Photo
Geographic location (lat/long)
Events (Name, Registration Date, Check-in Date, Attendance Count)
Emails (coming soon...)
Tips for Effective Segmentation
Keep it Simple: Avoid overly complex criteria for easier management.
Use Tags for static lists: Organize your contacts with tags to create lists that are not tied to filters.
Combine Segments: Create overarching groups by combining smaller segments.
