How to Set Up Sales Tax (VAT) on Event Tickets?

Turn on sales tax for event and class tickets, set your default rate, choose whether ticket prices include tax, and override the rate for a single event or ticket type.

If your organization charges sales tax on event tickets, Raklet can calculate it at checkout and show it on every registration invoice. You set your tax rate once in your event settings, and every event uses it automatically. You can still give a single event or ticket type a different rate when you need to.

Sales tax has different names in different countries: VAT in the EU, UK and Switzerland, GST in Australia, Canada and India, KDV in Türkiye, and sales tax in the US. Raklet calls it "sales tax" everywhere.

Turn On Sales Tax for Your Organization

Go to Events, click Settings, and open the Sales tax tab.

Fill in the fields and click Save:

  • Turn on sales tax: tick this box to start charging tax. While it is off, no tax is applied to any event, even if an event has its own rate.

  • Legal name: your organization's registered name, printed on invoices.

  • Tax Number: your organization's VAT or tax registration number, printed on invoices.

  • Invoice address: the address printed on invoices. Leave it empty to use your organization's invoice address.

  • Reference Number: an optional reference printed on invoices.

  • Tax rates (%): every rate you use, separated by commas, for example 20, 5, 0. Use 0 for tax-exempt tickets.

  • Default rate (%): the rate every event uses unless you set a different one.

  • Prices include sales tax: tick this if the ticket prices you enter already include tax. Untick it to add tax on top of the ticket price. See the next section for an example.

Prices That Include Tax vs. Tax Added on Top

This setting does not change your tax rate. It decides whether the price you type for a ticket already contains the tax. For a ticket priced at 100 with a 20% rate:

  • Prices include sales tax: the buyer pays 100. The invoice splits it into 83.33 net and 16.67 tax.

  • Add sales tax on top: the buyer pays 120. The invoice shows 100 net and 20 tax.

Use a Different Rate for One Event

Most events don't need anything here. Use this only when one event is taxed differently from the rest, for example a tax-exempt training session.

When you create or edit an event, scroll to the Sales tax & invoicing section. Empty fields use your organization settings.

  • Sales tax (VAT) %: the rate for this event. Leave it empty to use your default rate. Enter 0 if this event is not taxed.

  • Prices include sales tax: choose Same as organisation to follow your settings, or pick Prices include sales tax or Add sales tax on top for this event only.

  • Reference Number: a reference printed on this event's invoices. Leave it empty to use your organization's reference number.

Tip: if you type a rate into an event, that event keeps it. If you later change your default rate in Settings, the event will not follow the change. Leave the field empty if you want the event to always use your default rate.

Use a Different Rate for One Ticket Type

Each ticket type has the same two fields: Sales tax (VAT) % and Prices include sales tax. Leave them empty or set to Same as event to follow the event.

Raklet uses the most specific setting it finds: first the ticket type, then the event, then your organization settings.

Things to Know

  • When sales tax is on, every event registration gets an invoice. The invoice always shows the tax rate and amount, even when the rate is 0%.

  • If sales tax is off for your organization, the event and ticket forms show a notice with a link to turn it on. Any rates entered on events or tickets are not applied until you do.

  • Sales tax is not the card processing fee. To pass card fees to buyers, use the Service fee option on the ticket type.

  • Sales tax works for event and class tickets only. It is not applied to membership fees or donations.
